Requirements for work submitted for printing:

When supplying native files please ensure that it is supplied on a CD/USB drive with ALL linked Graphics, Photos & Fonts. Please ensure the file/document size is set up with 3mm bleed all around if colour is required to go all the way to the edge of file/document for trimming purposes.

When supplying a press ready PDF FILE; ensure there is 3mm bleed with trim marks and fonts embedded in the file. Alternatively convert all fonts to outline or paths.

Check colour separations; use CMYK colour space. RGB is NOT TO BE USED. Specify clearly if additional Pantone colours are used as this generates an extra printing plate.

Ensure photos and images are high resolution 300 dpi, saved as tiff. Check that photos are not too dark.

Check logos are high resolution and that fonts are converted to outlines or paths.

Supply previous printed samples and colour guides if the same CMYK colour breakdowns are applied to the new file.

Things to avoid:

Do not create lengthy page layouts using Photoshop as this produces huge file sizes and small black text becomes CMYK which is unnecessary.

Borders, text and graphics too close to the edge of the page (max 5mm within trim marks on business cards) and approximately 15mm on book work.

Please ensure your images are converted to CMYK.

If using large blocks of black - add 30% cyan tint to print over black, making black print richer.

Using images from web sites as they may not be at a high enough resolution and in a RGB colour space.

If you ONLY have Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point or Publisher:

Please note that Word, Excel and Power point only use RGB colour space. These are not professional layout programmes intended for the press.

Avoid using these to design publications that require stringent colour control.(They are more suitable for digital printing where colour match is not an issue).

Publisher is the only Microsoft programme offering a CMYK colour conversion - please ensure you use this throughout your publication within the document settings. Ensure black text is made up of black (K) in the CMYK colour sliders. All photos to be CMYK only (can only be converted in Photoshop) as there are no trapping facilities within Publisher.

Ensure standard page sizes are used, i.e. A5, A4 or A3.
